STICKING IT TO COMMUTERS – The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, or SEPTA, has just about crippled the transit system in Philly. Just after Game 5 in the World Series came to a close (the final games will be played in New York),
SEPTA announced a transit strike – a strike that had been in the works since last March when the union’s contracts with the city ended. Commuters woke up this morning to find themselves with little public transportation to get to and from work. Those that found a way to get to their jobs aren’t sure how they’ll get home.
Union workers want a yearly wage increase of 4%, and they want to maintain the 1% health care contribution they currently pay. The last two SEPTA strikes were in 2005 and 1998, and lasted 7 days and 40 days respectively.
